Section 132 revealed to the Saints the new and everlasting covenants of eternal marriage. What four things are necessary in order for a marriage to be eternal? What promises are made to us if we abide by the covenants involved in eternal marriage? How do you personally honor your covenants in your marriage, or intend to honor them when you are married?
- Are married in accordance with the Lord's word and law
- Are married by one who has the keys of the priesthood
- Have their marriage sealed by the Holy Spirit of Promise
- Abide in the covenant
Although my patriarchal blessing also gives me this person qualification for having an eternal marriage:
"It can be forever if you’re willing to live the law of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to serve your brothers and sisters in the earth and to call upon the Lord in prayer in behalf of your brothers and sisters. Many of them will be stricken and in fear at the time you pray but you can lift the burdens from them because the Lord will hear your prayers."
The promises made to use include:
- "Inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths" (vs. 19)
- "Pass by the angels" to their exaltation (vs. 19)
- Be gods for all eternity (see vs. 20)
- Have a "continuation of the lives" (vs. 22)
One thing that I think about to help me in my marriage is I think about being a mission president's wife. To me being a mission president and wife would require having an exemplary marriage since many young men and women will interact and see exactly what you do. When I was single, I knew the Lord wanted me to serve a mission and when I would be in potential compromising situations, I would think, "If I participate in this, I will not be worthy to be a missionary and I know the Lord wants me to be a missionary." It was always enough for me to stop and change my course. Although I don't know if the Lord has in store for Joe and I to be mission president and wife, I still use it as a pattern because I know that the standards I hold for my marriage in that regard are the same ones I need to know anyway.
